The Rangamani group at UCSD is recruiting a postdoc in the field of biophysical modeling of cellular membranes. The project will focus on developing theoretical models and implementing computational simulations of the mechanics of the lipid bilayer, lipid-protein interactions, the glycocalyx, and the actin cortex. Example biophysical processes that may be applicable include the formation of extracellular vesicles and endocytosis; see our recent publications on this topic here.
Successful candidates will have a strong background in mathematical modeling, membrane biophysics, and membrane-protein interactions. They should also be self-starters and be strongly motivated to work on complex interdisciplinary problems.
This role advances the research aims of the group through a combination of project work and collaborations within the group and experimental collaborators.
In addition to high quality research publications, the postdoctoral scholar is expected to develop and apply for fellowship applications and other independent projects with the group's support.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to
- Development of mathematical models from first principles and simulations using scientific computing
- Supervision and training of graduate students and undergraduate researchers in the group.
- Preparation of manuscripts, fellowship, and grant applications in collaboration with the PI.
- Attend and present research at group, local, and national meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in computational biophysics, membrane biophysics, physics, or a related field
- Knowledge of membrane mechanics, polymer biophysics, actin biophysics, and cell shape changes
- Proficiency in differential geometry, high performance computing, finite-element methods, and molecular dynamics simulations.
- Motivated to learn new skills and technologies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Application Requirements
The position is available immediately with flexible starting dates. Interested candidates should email Prof. Rangamani with the following
1. A cover letter that includes a statement of research interests and envisioned interactions with the lab
2. Current CV
3. Names and contacts for three references
All postdoctoral positions are governed by the UAW contract and members of the group are expected to abide by UCSD Principles of Community.
